The writing of a PhD dissertation in the history of science, technology or medicine is the path to follow for those who want to acquire more profound knowledge in a specific area through their own original research. The PhD programme in History of Science (UAB-UB) coordinated by the CEHIC is the only one in Spain to merit the Mention to Excellence of the Spanish Ministry of Education from the first edition of such a recognition. This facilitates the participation of guest scholars in seminars, maintaining active participation by the centre’s academic community.
Doctoral studies in History of science at the UAB are part, alongside with Doctoral studies in History of science at the UB, of the PhD programme in History of science (UAB-UB) that also includes the Master in History of science: science, history and society (UAB-UB). Despite the PhD programme is only one, and conversely to the Masters stage, the stage corresponding to the writing of a dissertation (“Doctoral studies”) is carried out in one university or the other. The student will register, write and defend the dissertation whether at the UAB or the UB, and will be subject to each university’s own regulations.
Students willing to start a dissertation should have taken at least 60 credits in an official postgraduate programme, or hold a European Official Masters degree. In both cases, the student should have taken 15 research credits and have a total of 300 credits counting both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Where students have not done a research of their own in history of science, they might be obliged to take some modules of the Master in History of science: science, history and society (UAB-UB).
Doctoral students can join any line of research existing at the CEHIC, or approach another subject in the field of the history, technology and medicine. PhD supervisors can be chosen among any member of the centre. In case the lecturer is not ascribed to the UAB, the student must have a tutor from this university.
