The master's degree in History of Science: Science, History and Society (UAB-UB) explores the social and historical dimension of science, technology and medicine. It studies examples from different disciplines and periods, from the origins of mathematics to molecular biology. The master's degree asks important questions about the evolution of science: How is scientific knowledge produced? How does it achieve social acceptance? What is the relationship between science and technology, and between the different sciences? Students are given ways to approach these questions and are trained to undertake historical research or scientific communication.
This is an inter-university master's degree (UAB-UB) with the participation of Pompeu Fabra University, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, and the Institució Milà i Fontanals, of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). The lecturers are specialists in History of Science and have considerable teaching and research experience.
The master's degree offers two specialisations: research-oriented and professionally oriented. The research specialisation emphasises those competences needed for an academic career. The professional specialisation prepares students for working in areas such as science communication and popularisation, museology, and management of the scientific heritage. Both specialisations give access to Doctoral studies in History of Science.
This is the first official master's degree in history of science in Spain. It originates from the Inter-University Doctorate in History of Science, which received the Spanish Education and Science Ministry's award for quality.
