Science and Power in 18th Century Prussia: Kant's Gedanken in Context
Supervisor/s: Silvia de Bianchi
Date of defense: 06-09-2017

Immanuel Kant published his first work, Gedanken von der wahren Schätzung der lebendigen Kräfte, in 1749. On the same year, Kant sent his work to the savant Leonhard Euler, asking him to review his work in order to obtain his patronage and to write a review of the Gedanken. Even if Kant sought the sponsorship from Euler, the latter did not respond to Kant's letter. That event occurred inside the framework in which the Prussian economy was being developed, given that Prussia could be considered part of the semiperiphery during the 18th century. In that context, several institutions were created, such as the Berlin Academy of Sciences and the University of Halle, which will be of support in the economic and cultural development of Prussian society to reach the level of economic development of the hegemonic powers of that time: England and France.
