La ciencia de John Ruskin
Supervisor/s: Antoni Malet Tomàs
Date of defense: 09-09-2013

John Ruskin, is an intellectual figure of great importance in Victorian culture, his extensive work includes topics ranging from art criticism and social criticism to a wide work as a draughtsman. He also dabbled around scientific issues, especially in the field of Geology and Meteorology. The profusion of his work has led to the generation of an extensive literature, mainly in the fields of literature, political history, art history, gender history and the history of theater. This paper describes some of the issues highlighted in the literature about his scientific writings, how it was received and highlighting through secondary literature, its relationship to science and three themes: the argument of scientific precision in Ruskin, Ruskin's critique of scientific materialism and his Science as an educator and communicator agent. After reading secondary sources, I have concluded that addressing the figure of Ruskin as a participant in the construction of the meanings of science and art, as proposed by Katherine Harrington, is a convenient starting point for future research.
