La ciencia en la dramaturgia de Henrik Ibsen
Supervisor/s: Antoni Malet Tomàs
Date of defense: 09-09-2013

The objective of this research paper is to analyze the dramaturgy of Henrik Ibsen and how Science is presented within it. Three of Ibsen’s Realist period plays, in which elements of Science in the nineteenth century appear, are studied: Ghosts, An Enemy of the People, and The Wild Duck. However, I will focus mainly on The Enemy of the People since the main plot of the play is centered on the figure of the scientist and on Science. Throughout this work I provide clues to understand the reasons that made Ibsen chose Science and the scientist as the main protagonists in this play, and sustain the latter must be revalued as an historical tool. To this means, I analyze the personal and social circumstances in which the play was written, and expose why the prestige of Science in the nineteenth century was a clear driving force for Ibsen to consider presenting his arguments through a scientific plot. Additionally, I highlight the role of literature as a tool to help the Historian of Science in defining his object of study, and as an important element in the construction of a critical scientificity.
