This research is a descriptive approach to the history of the National Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine ''Leopoldo Izquieta Pérez'' (INHMT-LIP). After this first prospecting, it has been possible to warn that this entity is a key to understand the process of health not only in Ecuador but also in the Americas during the 20th century. This presumption arises because the information obtained refers to the expansionism and the political, cultural and economic influence of United States in Latin America during that century. Considering these aspects, the narrative has been made taking account the Republican History of Ecuador, as a reference, due to the political events along the history of the Nation have been part of this public institution as well. In this respect and for better understanding, we firstly describe some circumstances that were part of the inception of the National Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine ''Leopoldo Izquieta Pérez'' (INHMT-LIP, 1937-1940). Secondly, we present data about its foundation, consolidation and expansion between 1941 and 1979. Later, it has been explained the reasons why since 1980 it becomes as a Reference Center for Tropical Diseases to the Public Health Ministry of Ecuador. Finally, it has been presented the conclusions. Those questions are intended to be a guide to establish a future research. The purpose will be to elucidate the impact the INHMT-LIP has had in the field of Public Health in Ecuador during the period between 1937 and 1980.
