Supervisor/s: Jon Arrizabalaga Valbuena
Date of defense: 24-05-2007

It is a thesis in the area of History of Science, presented by summary of publications.

The five publications that are presented approach different aspects of the development of the scientific knowledge of the living beings along XVIII and XIX centuries, in Catalonia and in the Spanish state, when a deep change is being produced in the form of understanding the nature, passing from a fixist vision and isolated of each organism, to an evolutionist vision and where the living beings are strongly related with the other organizations and the environment.

The first publication is a chapter of a book on the Real Academia de Ciències i Arts de Barcelona, where the direction of natural history is studied from the foundation of the institution, the year 1764, until the reopening of the University of Barcelona, in year 1845.

The second publication is also a chapter of a book, in this case about Humboldt and the Spanish science, where analyzes the form in what different Spanish environments of communication treat the figure of Humboldt during his life.

The third publication is an article published in the magazine Llull. It explains like the person from Barcelona Antoni Bergnes de las Casas (1801-1879) was an important diffusor of the scientific culture across his work publishing and from the magazines he was director.

The fourth publication is also an article, published in the magazine Asclepio. In this article is analyzed how through the illustrated magazine La Abeja, directed for Bergnes, it spread evolutionist approaches, particularly lamarckism.

The fifth publication is the introduction to the first translation into the Catalan of the Philosophie zoologique of Lamarck. It explain the works of this great French naturalist, the historiogràfic treatment that it has received as well as the causes that have originated it is analyzed, and witnesses of his ideas in Catalonia and in the Spanish state during his life and until 1868, when the great public debate starts about the evolution of the species in the whole of the state.

Here the remarkable presence of the evolutionist approaches of Lamarck along the 19th century especially in Catalonia is ascertained.

As conclusions of the presented research the following ones are pointed out. On the one hand, the need to study remarkable naturalists of XVIII and XIX century often forgotten, like Josep Comes i Bonells, Antoni Llobet i Vall-llosera in Catalonia and Juan Mieg in Madrid, the institutions where the naturalistics studies, and the scientific divulging in spain along the 19th century especially through the illustrated magazines, in order to understand better the development of the scientific study of the nature during this period in Catalonia and in the state Spanish.

On the other hand it is necessary to continue the study of the presence of the lamarckism ideas in Catalonia and in the set of the spanish state, studying thoroughly the work of the Spanish pupils of Lamarck in Paris, and to continue its study until the civil war and in the re-introduction of the ideas evolutionist on Spain the fifties of the XX century.

Finally, and in the light of this datum that they bring to light the important presence of the evolutionist approaches of Lamarck along the 19th century, the vision of the called Darwinian revolution centered in an almost exclusive way on the influence of Darwin and his supporters, to include the remarkable influence of other thinkers like the mentioned Lamarck, makes necessary to reconsider.
