The Development of Artificial Insemination in Pre-revolutionary Russia and in the Soviet Era

Artificial insemination (AI) is a broadly used technique nowadays. Its application in animal breeding programs revolutionized animal production. Till the beginnings of 20th century AI was used only in cases of infertility in human gynecology and veterinary medicine. Ilya Ivanovich Ivanov, a Russian scientist, was the first that applied AI in animal breeding programs in pre-revolutionary Russia. Ivanov developed the technique and performed AI in a variety of animals: horses, cattle, dogs etc. He mainly worked for the high bureaucracy, the Russian aristocracy and royalty in order to create good quality horses. His vision to apply AI in a massive way was not realized due to the small scale animal production and the beginning of the First World War. After the socialist revolution Ivanov’s vision was endorsed by the Bolsheviks. The collectivization of livestock production concentrated big numbers of animals in state (sovkhoz) and collective (kolkhoz) farms. The first massive AI worldwide was realized within collectivization process by his successors in 1931. Since then Milovanov and his colleagues applied AI as the main tool in animal breeding all over Soviet territory. Contacted research and its direct connection with production made possible to breed by means of AI millions of sheep, cattle and horses. Herd productivity was enhanced and new breeds of higher quality and production were created.
