Medicine and its publics in interwar medicine: the Sindicat de Metges de Catalunya

Leading researcher:
Funding entity: Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia
Duration: 2006 - 2009

This project deals with the different strategies aimed at attaining public visibility performed by Catalan medical experts during the first half of the 20th century, as derived from the collection of the Sindicat de Metges de Catalunya and personal archives of important physicians such as Bellido, Turro and Aiguader. Its aim is to understand the so called “medical Catalanism”, through the study of the role of the Sindicat de Metges during the historical context of the social struggle and institutional consolidation of the Mancomunitat. It also covers the popularizing effect of the Associació de Metges de Llengua Catalana conferences, and the development of the Butlletí del Sindicat, the instrument for communicating medical ideas and practices among members of the syndicate.
