The Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation renewed the Quality Mention, guaranteeing the studies' prestige and funding for mobility
CEHIC 12/11/2008

The PhD program in History of Science (UAB-UB) that the CEHIC coordinates and which is jointly taught by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Universitat de Barcelona, has recently obtained the prestigious Mention of Quality awarded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation. The evaluative commission agreed renewing the Mention until the scholar year 2011-2012. The program had obtained the award from the first time it was created during the scholar year 2003-2004, turning it into the only Spanish PhD program in History of science awarded with such a distinction.
The Mention of Quality does not only mean recognition for the work carried out by teachers, researchers and students that participate in the program. It also allows accessing different additional aids for which it is a prerequisite. In the last years, grants for the mobility of teachers have been crucial for counting with a number of visiting professors at the Masters in History of science: science history and society (UAB-UB).
Renewal of the Mention of Quality was possible after a strict evaluation that took into consideration several aspects of the teaching offer: the content of the courses and its adaptation to the general aims of the program, methodology, curricula of teachers and researchers, the number of PhD dissertations read and registered in relation to the number of teachers, and publication and conference contribution derived from such researches, among others. The Ministry also considered relevant the existence of information mechanisms addressed to students (tutorials, supervision of research, etc), and other controls that guarantee in the future the same quality standards achieved to the moment.
In the process of renewing the Mention of Quality, a commission from the Agencia Nacional de Evaluación de la Calidad y Acreditación (ANECA) visited the Centre for the History of Science in March, 2008. They met the coordinator of the PhD program, Xavier Roqué, as well as a delegation of teachers and students.
In the resulting inform, the commission particularly valued the interdisciplinary character of the program, the effort put in order to adequate the courses to the heterogeneous profile of students, the periodical inner revision of the program, and fluidity in communication among every involved party, thanks to the mailing list and the Virtual Campus, in which relevant information such as scholarships, contracts and teaching material are announced. The commission also considered important surveys carried out among students in order to knowing their suggestions, and the informal, thus permanent, contact with alumni and other groups of society.
