cehic 26/09/2011

FROM THE 2010-11 ACADEMIC YEAR, THE MASTERS IN HISTORY OF SCIENCE OFFERS NEW CAREERS OPPORTUNITIES AND THE PARTICIPATION OF NEW AND HIGHLY RENOWNED LECTURERS

From the 2011-12 academic year, the Masters in "History of Science: Science, History and Society" will have two focuses: research and professional. The research focus will enable students to take an academic course followed by studies for a PhD in History of Science and/or in-depth research of specific aspects of science and technology and its social and cultural implications in the past. The professional focus enables the student to mainly work in such areas as communication, the dissemination of science, museology and the management of scientific heritage.
As well as the UAB and UB, the Masters also includes, for the 2010-11 academic year, the collaboration of lecturers from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), the Milà i Fontanals Institution (CSIC) and Pompeu Fabra University (UPF). This provides a wide range of possibilities for solid and plural training for students.

NEW CURRICULUM (pending acceptance by the ANECA)

On the basis of a common introductory module (M1), in which the major stages of the History of Science are presented, two compulsory modules are defined depending on the chosen focus. The research focus presents current issues of major interest to the History of Science (science and gender, science and religion, scientific controversies, technoscience, etc.) (M2), while the professional focus offers solid training in museums, scientific heritage (archives, instruments, machines, etc.), along with details on science in the media in the 20th century (M3). In the second semester, the student can opt between one module, taught by UB lecturers, that analyses fundamental aspects of ancient, medieval, and early Modern Age science (M6), a second module dealing with health and medical problems in contemporary societies (M7), or a third module that studies the relationships between science, technology and war in the 19th-20th centuries (M8). Finally, the module "Project / External Work Experience and End of Masters Project" (M4), or the module "Initiation in research and End of Masters Project" (M5), complete solid training both in terms of preparation for future doctorate research, and for an important range of careers prospects.
